NAPLAN ASSESSMENTS

It has been so wonderful to see our year 3 and 5 students giving it their all in the NAPLAN assessments. Students are assessed in the following areas: Numeracy, Reading, Writing and Language Conventions (Punctuation, Spelling and Grammar).

These assessments are only a check-in to see how our students and school are travelling. The students have shown a Growth Mindset and determination to work through the four assessments. Results for NAPLAN are generally released mid August - mid September. Student's individual results will be sent home as soon as we receive them.

SEMESTER ONE REPORTS

Teachers are currently preparing the semester one school reports which will be sent home to parents on Thursday 17th June. These reports are a comprehensive review of your child's academic and social development. They also feature their future directions and where we hope to develop next for your individual child. Teachers will be available throughout the last week of term (21st June - 25th June) for parent/teacher interviews. The designated evening for the interviews is Wednesday 23rd June. The teachers will be available for 10minute interviews until 6pm on the 23rd of June. The teachers will also do their best to open interview times before and after school throughout the Parent/Teacher interview week. How to book and the available times will be communicated in the coming weeks.

ROOF REPLACEMENT

You will begin to see some scaffolding and fences being put up around some classrooms over the next two weeks. Nine of our classrooms are getting fresh new roofs. During this time, students in the affected rooms will be working from other spaces in our school (hall, library, spare rooms etc). Those classes affected will be notified and the students will be supported by their teachers whilst out of their rooms.

K-2 ATHLETICS CARNIVAL - 4th JUNE 2021 at SACKVILLE STREET PUBLIC SCHOOL

We are so excited to hold our K-2 Carnival back at school this year! Our parents have asked to have the carnival back on school grounds so we can hold our traditional picnic lunch / races / novelty events where they can be closer to the action! We are busy getting everything ready and organised for a much loved tradition here at the school. More information will be coming out soon, but for now, save the date! The date is set for Friday 4th June with a wet-weather back up date of Friday 18th June. All parents, friends and family are most welcome on the day.

We look forward to seeing more of you and especially catching up at the upcoming carnival!

Stage 2 News

Congratulations to the students who participated in the first round of the Public Speaking Competition here at school. Students prepared speeches on topics such as racism, multiculturalism and belonging. All of them did an amazing job and should be very proud of their efforts. The next step will involve 6 selected students developing their impromptu speech skills with Mrs Muzyk in the next few weeks.

For English, Stage 2 have been developing their procedure writing skills in preparation for their culminating task. They wrote recipes for foods such as sushi, garlic cheese pizza and fairy bread. 3/4M even got to put their skills to good use and enjoy making it themselves. Building on from these procedure writing skills, the students will be modifying a game later in the term for individuals with specific disabilities. This week's focus has been on deafness and it would be great if they could share some of their new learning at home with you.

In the library this past fortnight, students learnt what it takes to write a good book review. They quickly discovered that it wasn’t as easy as it first seemed. With some editing and feedback, some are now ready to be published on our own online library system! Students have also continued on with their coding and programming programs.

Just a reminder that homework is due next Monday. After the amazing efforts last semester, all teachers can’t wait to listen to some speeches on belonging! Our first winter gala day is also coming up on Friday of week 6 so make sure all notes and money come into the office ASAP.

Stage 1 News

Over the last fortnight, Stage One has continued working on their poetry. This week and next is very exciting for Year One and Two because they have been working on their culminating task to show Buzzbee. Buzzbee wants to get to know Stage One students better. He has organised a poetry recital and would like students to write and perform a poem that tells him all about how unique they are! So stay tuned for more photos to come…

‘Be Motivated’ was our PBIS mindset focus for the last fortnight. It makes the Stage One teachers very proud to see so many students display this learning disposition in the classroom and on the playground.

The K-2 Athletics Carnival is back at school! The carnival will be held on Friday the 4th of June. Students will have the opportunity to participate in track and novelty field events. Parents are also welcomed to spend the day with us and have a picnic lunch. A note will be going home in the next few days.

Regards,

Mrs Doughty and Miss Staats

Kindergarten

Our Kindergarten classrooms continue to be hives of activity and I have thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to work with KM during reading group rotations and was blown away by the writing of some of the students. I spent additional time with KS and the Kinder students from K/1J where I introduced a new maths tool - the Rekenrek. The children were keen to explore this new tool and I look foward to seeing how they use it to increase their understanding of number relationships throughout the remainder of this term.

Two important reminders from our teachers:

1. Sport day has changed to Thursday. Please make sure that your child is wearing their sport uniform and suitable shoes every Thursday. This is just as important if the weather is poor as the physical activities will be moved to the hall.

2. If you have not already done so, please return the history sheet that was recently sent home as this is required for upcoming learning activities in the classrooms.

Our feature classes for this edition are KS and KP

During this past week in KS we enjoyed getting to meet our buddies from 5/6M. We worked together with the provocations to explore our imagination and create a story. In maths we enjoyed learning about position and direction, Miss Sterling challenged us with an adventure activity where we had to use the position and direction words to get from our classroom to the playground. We are continuing to work on our reading, writing and phonics.

Miss Sterling

This week in KP we have been learning about capacity. We used different size containers to explore the meaning of full, half full, half empty, nearly empty and empty. In literacy we looked at the text “Our Granny” where we used provocations to retell our own stories and dramatic play in our very own Grandma's House. We then wrote some amazing sentences about our very own Grandma’s or Mums. It was nice to finally meet our buddy class 5/6J. We played in Grandma's house, coloured in together and got to know our new friends. Congratulations KP on being the first kindergarten class to receive the trophy at assembly for outstanding behaviour during assembly. Next assembly we will be rewarded by sitting on chairs. Well done KP.

This fortnight our PBIS lesson focus continues our strong anti-bullying message. Students are learning what it means to be an 'upstander' and are exploring scenarios, developing strategies to help others in difficult situations.

Our mindset goal focus is 'be persistent.' Students are encouraged to demonstrate persistence in everyday tasks by trying their best and never giving up!

Buzzbee has been impressed with all the mindset goals that are being demonstrated during our daily clubs and extracurricular programs.
