Principal's Message

Published by Kylie Lyneham

Welcome back to Term 2 after what I hope was an enjoyable break. Ramadan Mubarak to our Muslim families. I hope Easter time was also special for our community. It certainly was at Sackville Street. To hold our annual Easter Hat Parade again was very exciting and I thank the supportive families and staff who made the day special for our students.

This term we continue with planning for events that include our whole school community. We are looking forward to our upcoming cross country carnival, Mothers’ Day afternoon tea and stall. Please look out for notes and other information coming home for those events. We will be sending home a term calendar shortly to go on the fridge so you can plan for these events.

Deputy Principal Position and Vacant Assistant Principal Position

As you may have seen on Facebook late last term I was delighted to announce the permanent appointment of Michelle Murhan to what was formerly my Deputy Principal position. She proved through merit selection that her deep knowledge of our school context, curriculum expertise and outstanding management of student wellbeing (just to name a few qualities), made her the right person for the job.

We are currently forming a recruitment panel for the Assistant Principal position. I would like to thank Mrs Jones in advance, for completing the training to become a panellist and giving her time to represent the parent group on this panel.

NAPLAN

Please be advised that NAPLAN testing for Years 3 & 5 will take place in the week commencing 10 May 2021. It is important that students not feel stressed by this testing as it is only a point in time assessment. Our teachers have a far more comprehensive picture of your child’s progress. If needed, talk to your child about being relaxed as they will do their best when they are comfortable. It is also important that students do not arrive late on those days. We will also schedule testing around Eid al Fitr celebrations so that all students have access to testing. Please carefully read notes that will come home that will contain more information.

Mothers Day Stall and Afternoon

Notes with more details are coming home next week (digital copies appear in the From the Office section of this newsletter) but please be aware that our Mothers' Day Stall will be on Tuesday 4 May and our afternoon tea day will be held after school on the Thursday 6 May. If you can volunteer any time to assist with the selling of gifts in the morning of 4 May 2021, please contact the school to provide your details.

K-2 Sports Carnival 4 June 2021

In consultation with parents, we have decided to return to holding our K-2 Sports Carnival on our school grounds. This is such an exciting day for our K-2 students and I know the community love to come and cheer our kids on.

Deputy Principal Message

Published by Michelle Murhan

Welcome back to a very exciting term of new learning and exciting activities at Sackville Street Public School. On Tuesday we held our first combined staff and parents meeting after school. It was a great afternoon and we value the input of the parents and staff on the two focus areas (Extra-Curricular Clubs/Programs and Attendance). If you were unable to make the session, please check your emails as you will have received an email inviting you to contribute to the activities we did during the session.

ANZAC DAY

On Friday 23 April 2021 we will be commemorate ANZAC day here at school and we are pleased to be able to have parents and carers join us for this occasion. The Bradley Street gate will be the only gate open and we ask that you sanitise and check in with the QR code before making your way to the hall. Please be seated and settled by 9.50am to allow the ceremony to begin promptly at 10.00am. Due to the solemn nature of the ceremony, only our 3-6 students will be attending. The K-2 students will explore ANZAC Day themes in class with their teachers.

It is my privilege to accompany our School Captains at the 2021 Ingleburn RSL ANZAC Day Dawn Service. This year we are only permitted to have 1 staff member and two students attend. I would like to thank Mia, Casey and their families in advance for your service and for representing our school community.

TERM CALENDAR

In the next few days a paper copy of our term calendar will be sent home to families. We are so excited to have our community back on site. I encourage you to keep an eye on upcoming events and if you are free, please come and join us. As we advertise more events and dates it would be helpful to add them to your calendar to keep track of all the activities happening this term.

LOST PROPERTY

Outside the library there is a very large tub that is overflowing with lost property. We encourage you and your children to check through the tub for lost jumpers, lunch boxes etc. 5/6P students are regularly checking and returning items that have names clearly marked, but a majority of the items are not marked with student names. A few times a term, this tub is cleaned out and the items are given to students to take home.

KINDERGARTEN WRITERS

This week I had the pleasure of seeing these two clever Kindergarten kids. They were able to share their writing with me and explained that their learning goal was to share something they had done in the holidays. Keep up the great work teachers and students, it certainly made my day seeing your smiling faces and sharing in your learning!

CLUBS AND PROGRAMS

Now that we no longer need to have staff on morning and afternoon gate duties, we have been able to organise Extra-Curricular Clubs and Programs which will run during Lunch and Recess every day. These include a variety of activities such as Coding, Soccer, Drama and Dance, Harlem Globe Trotters Basketball, Skipping, Gardening, Art Club, Film, Yoga and African Drumming. There are many others which will be sent out on a weekly timetable so families are aware of what is available to them each day. The difference between a 'Club' and a 'Program', is that the students who join a 'Club' will be expected to commit to coming every week. Some of the groups are working towards a performance or showcase so these students will need to be there each week. Students who do not want to commit to a club, can join in on a 'Program' which are activities that are short term and do not require a longer commitment. This will include things like Bootcamp, Soccer, Craft, Just Dance and Small Group Games. It is our hope that with this huge number of activities to choose from each day, our students will have plenty of things to keep them busy and active during the breaks. Students who are interested in a 'Club' will have a chance to try out the activity over the next two weeks before making a commitment to go each session.

Stage 3 News

Published by Kerrie Bryant

Welcome back to term 2!

In Stage 3 we will be learning about:

English - our literary theme is 'Belonging'. Students will explore texts to answer the question - "Who in our community might feel like they don't belong and why?" The Stage 3 team worked collaboratively to strategically select texts which will support the teaching of inclusivity in regards to race, gender, appearance and physical or intellectual disabliities. The goal is to educate students about inclusivity and develop a culture where diversity is respected in our society.

Maths - topics we plan to cover are: time, 2D shape, 3D objects, angles, division, subtraction, mass and volume. Students will have opportunities to demonstrate their skills and understandings through engagement in 'real-life' culminating tasks. These may include: being commissioned to create artworks for the office areas, following and adjusting a recipe to make playdough for the Kindergarten classes and developing a budget for a class party.

History - this term, students will begin learning about government and migration.

Science - we will continue learning about the Physical World. This term, the focus is on electricity.

PDHPE - in Health, students will build on the English theme by learning about being unique, transitions and challenges, empathy, inclusion and respect.

Creative Arts - this term, our focus is on music - performing, organising sound and listening.

Throughout the year, teachers will develop and teach lessons around the varied cultural events that occur for the students in our classes. Last term, students learned about what Easter means to Christians. During the first two weeks of this term, students will learn about Ramadan and what it means for Muslims.

Over the next couple of weeks, Stage 3 students and teachers will work collaboratively to develop a set of expectations. Students were asked to discuss what they expected of: themselves, each other and staff. Student representatives will join teachers at their collaboration session this week to further develop their ideas. A note will be sent home in week 2 to provide families with the opportunity to also have input into this topic.

Thank you for your ongoing support.

Mrs Kerrie Bryant, Stage 3 Assistant Principal

Welcome back to what is shaping up to be a very busy Term 2. By now your child will have bought home a request for some information and artefacts that they can share with their peers while they learn about who they are, where they come from and their families. This is traditionally an exciting unit of work as the children come to understand how similar and different they are to those around them. Please do not send in precious items, photos are prefered.

With the onset of cooler weather, it is timely to remind everyone about the need to ensure that all items, particularly jackets are labelled with the child's name. Frequently, children will take off their jumper or jacket after getting hot while running around in the playground, they put it down and then forget about it. Names on children's property greatly increases the chance that it will be returned to the correct person eventually.

Thank you to the parents who joined staff this week to help develop plans around special interest groups for students as well as brainstorming initiatives to increase attendance. Watch out for information about many more opportunitites to get involved this term including our Mother's Day events and K-2 athletics carnival. In the meantime, enjoy some pictures from our Easter hat parade.
