Messages from the Senior Executive

Published by Michelle Murhan

It has been an amazing term, full of exciting events and opportunities to have our community back as partners in our learning. We would like to thank all the parents and families for coming along to celebrate Mothers Day, School Planning Sessions and of course our incredible K-2 Athletics Carnival that we held this week. All of these events do not happen without the hard work our teachers put in each day and I know you will join us in thanking the staff for going the extra mile this semester.

With Mrs Murhan’s appointment last term to Deputy Principal, her position was declared vacant earlier in Term 2 and a merit selection panel was conducted to appoint our new permanent Assistant Principal. We are so happy to announce that the successful candidate is Mrs Mel Doughty. Mrs Doughty has been a part of our school for many years and we are so pleased that the time was right for her to apply for permanent executive positions. Even more pleased that she was the successful applicant here at Sackville Street! Congratulations to you Mel, you are such a dedicated educator and we a very grateful to keep you here in your new role.

Last week Mrs Emily Cantwell began her maternity leave. The teacher on 1C for the remainder of the year will be Miss Tayla Kelly. Miss Kelly has worked at our school for all of 2021 and she will be continuing the great work Mrs Cantwell has set up in the 1C classroom. We wish Emily all the best for the safe arrival of her first child and can’t wait to meet the little one when the time is right.

Mrs Lyneham will be taking long service leave during week 10. Mrs Murhan will be available to assist while she is on leave. Please call the office to make an appointment if you need to speak to the executive.

Unfortunately it has become necessary to remind our community that the staff car parks (particularly the front office car park) is ONLY for staff and those who have a permit to park in the disability parking spaces. It is a high traffic area with cars and delivery trucks reversing and moving all times throughout the day. Please park along Bradley Street or Sackville Street and walk the short distance to drop off and pick up your children.

Semester One Reports are being sent home with your child on Thursday 17th June. Parent-Teacher Interviews are being held next week. Information and instructions on how to book has been sent home and was in the last edition of the newsletter. If you have any issues on the schoolinterviews.com site, please call the office on 9605 3073 and the staff in the office will help you book interviews.

We wish all of our staff, students and families a safe and relaxing holiday. The first day of term for students is Tuesday 13th July. We look forward to seeing you all after the break!

Stage 2 News

Published by Lee Purvis

Another busy and productive fortnight for Stage 2! Students took part in a Virtual History Incursion, where they were able to interact with experts from the Educational Centre at Botany Bay. They learnt about Dharawal life and culture for the first inhabitants before Captain Cook’s arrival at Kamay. They were also able to participate in a role play to understand some of the significant events when the first fleet sailed into Botany Bay in 1770. Students then worked as  botanical artists to create a drawing, just as Solander and Parkinson did in 1770.

Students have also been very busy researching and preparing for their English culminating task in Week 10. This week, they were able to put themselves in the shoes of someone who has cerebral palsy and imagine what it would be like to play games in the playground with their friends. They developed a greater understadnding of some of the challenges and difficulties that some people face every day. Students were then able to modify these games to give everyone a sense of inclusion and belonging. The Stage 2 teachers cannot wait to see the finished products next week.

Stage 2 have also been putting their finishing touches on their arcade games throughout the past few weeks. They cannot wait to share them with the school community on Thursday of week 10. There showcase will take place in the hall for all to see!

Just a couple of reminders with the end of the term fast approaching. Homework tasks are due back on Monday of week 10. We also have reports being sent home in week 9 and parent teacher interviews in the final week.

Kindergarten

The last fortnight has been a very eventful one for KP. We learnt how to be flexible as we moved our learning into the hall while our classroom roof was replaced. It was just like a camping trip!

In literacy we looked at texts about belonging. Family by Aunty Fay Muir and The Dress Up Box by Patrick Guest. We learnt the importance of family to our Aboriginal communities and the power of using your imagination to be wherever and whatever you want to be. We had a lot of fun with our very own dress up box becoming many different characters. In mathematics we learnt about ordinal numbers and practised this during running races in preparation for the athletics carnival. We also learnt about positional language. We followed instructions using the language ‘next to’, ‘under’, ‘in front of’, ‘behind’, ‘under’ and ‘on top of’ to draw items around an object. We further enhanced our understanding of the days of the week and played our favourite game ‘Days of the week’ in a very large hall space. We also looked at time and what activities we do during the day and during the night, what events take longer to complete and what takes a shorter time to complete and the difference between an analogue clock and a digital clock. After reading the story ‘The Most Magnificent Thing’ we created our own magnificent things using scrap materials - boxes, straws and foil were some of the items used. They were very impressive and all were magnificent!

Congratulations Sienna and Jubilee in receiving your awards at assembly.

Stage 3 Camp

Parliament and Civics Eduation Rebate (PACER)

Students from our school will soon be undertaking an education tour of the national capital. Students will be given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy.

The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government is contributing funding of $30.00 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion.  Please note this rebate has been factored into the fee payable of the camp reducing the cost to $370.00 per student.

Camp informaton

A pack was sent home today with each student attending camp.  Please ensure you read all the documentation as it contains essential information.  These notes can be found here:

Buzzbee News

Published by Melissa Doughty

This fortnight our focus is on being a positive and engaged class member. We are learning strategies to transition effectively from the playground back to the classroom for productive learning. Students are learning to 'beat the timer' to effectively learn skills in time management.

Our mindset focus goal is 'be imaginative.' Students have many opportunities to be imaginative each day at school. This fortnight they will collect special pink buzzbees to be drawn out in our special Buzzbee draw in assembly.

K-2 Athletics Carnival

Published by Siobhan Staats

On Tuesday, we had our K-2 Athletics Carnival and what a day it was! It was a huge success with students, teachers, and even parents participating in a variety of events. Students had the opportunity to run in races, but also get involved in a number of field events - high jump, long jump, sack races, shot put and so much more!

A big thank you to our house captains for helping with the day. You all did an amazing job with helping set up and getting the younger students in the carnival spirit. It was lovely to have the community back together again with many parents, grandparents, and caregivers attending the carnival.
